Samuel Jablon Exhibition

SAMUEL JABLON 12-03-2022 – 05-06-2022 Opere Nuove Samuel Jablon is a poet and painter. Each work is a snapshot of a poem he has written or imagined. Words heard on the subway, glimpsed in an advertisement or simply thought of become painted statements in a swirl of color. An abstract, almost expressionist background forms the basis for the calligraphies of the painted words. The chosen phrase may be a direct reflection of a recent experience, an expression of Jablon’s mood or simply arise from the artist’s brainstorming. In the technique, too, there is a comparison: the intellectuality of the words with the raw, instantaneous, textural painting technique made up of layers of acrylic and oil paint in larger random brushstrokes fueled by intuition. Many artists, especially in the second half of the 20th century, experimented with the concept of writing directly on canvas: Barbara Kruger, Jenny Holzer, Christopher Wool, On Kawara, Ed Ruscha, Richard Prince, Jonathan Meese, Glenn Li- gon … For the viewer, Jablon’s works are a unique experience; one is caught in the limbo between painting and poetry.
